November 05, 2011
The Club participated in the Ride to Defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) on Saturday, November 5th, 2011. Team IRB Rotary ride bicycles for a Metric Century (62.1 miles), 25 miles or 5 miles. So far the Team has raised over $5200 for ALS research through community donations. The Team will continue to collect donations through November 20th. To donate, click on any of the team members links on the Team page above.

Team IRB Rotary members begin the Metric Century ride.
(L-R) Guenter Neumueller, Bruce Sobut, Bill Atkinson, Michael Schulz (riding for his Mom, Herta), and Elizabeth Atkinson.
25 mile riders were Bruce Dewey, Lynn Johler and Willie Shulz (riding for his wife, Herta). The 5 mile group included Cheryl, Emily, and Mika Schulz.
The family and friends of the Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach participated in the Ride to Defeat ALS to raise much-needed funds for The ALS Association. The organization provides patient services, resources, and global funding for cutting-edge research.
This ride was an exciting opportunity to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. However, for Team IRB Rotary this cruel disease has hit close to home for our current President Michael Schulz. At the IRB Rotary Installation Luau Dinner on July 16, 2011, Michael had concerns about his Mom, Herta Schulz. She and Willi, her husband of 51 years, were attending the Luau that evening. Herta was having difficulty speaking and slurring her works. In the weeks to follow, the news was devastating. Herta Schulz, beloved mother, wife, sister, Oma, and friend to so many was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) a deadly disease that affects the motor neurons the brain and spinal cord.
On November 5, 2011, Team IRB Rotary rode in honor of Herta Schulz and others afflicted with ALS. We are still asking for your help. Please make a donation by sponsoring a rider. For more information, please contact the Rotary Club at (727) 517-2449.
We rode for those who cannot. There is no known cause or cure for ALS. The disease shows no partiality. It can strike anyone. Regardless of your age, gender, or ethnicity, you could become a victim who hears the doctor say, "You have ALS."
Join us for training rides every Sunday morning, weather permitting. Start time, distance and pace vary, but we keep groups together, rest often and usually have breakfast or lunch. We usually meet at Walsingham Park north entrance at 7:30 AM. If you would like to ride with us, please contact us or call (727) 517-2449 so we can update you with any changes.
